Remembering Dan Schneider, 1964-2021

Few people have had a greater impact on off road cycling in San Francisco than Dan Schneider. We were shocked to learn of his passing last month. I met Dan some time not too long after I moved to San Francisco. He was immediately memorable for his enthusiasm, his vision, his passion, his trail building skills, his ability to inspire and mentor others. He was a core part of the vision and execution of the restoration of miles of trails and habitat at Laguna Honda and elsewhere in the city, and will be missed.

SF Urban Riders and the Sutro Stewards are planning a public memorial later this year. As a way to remember all of the people whose lives Dan touched, we are collecting stories. Please submit your story of how you met Dan or another (shareable!) story by email. The collection will be posted online and the memories shared with all the people and communities he touched.

Please email your story about Dan to: RememberingDan@sfurbanriders.org

From Craig Dawson of the Sutro Stewards:

I first met Dan Schneider on a trail in 2004. We were digging side-by-side on a warm morning, building what would soon become the lower North Ridge Trail on Mount Sutro. We made some small talk as the morning progressed and I shared imagining the day when Mount Sutro could have trails for mountain bikes. Dan had the same idea, it turns out, and we had something more in common too, he was a cyclist and home brewer.

In 2005 Dan worked alongside a few friends including Ben Pease and myself to explore an old trail recently discovered on Mount Sutro. The difficult task took almost a year of brushing and tunneling through 15-foot high blackberry covering the steep hillsides. What we uncovered was a very old trail of substantial construction which we would later call the “Historic Trail”. We asked UCSF for permission to restore the trail with volunteer labor, and formed the Mount Sutro Stewards to aid in that effort. The program launched in September of 2006 with dozens of volunteers coming out to help at our first event.

Dan was an instrumental part of the Sutro Stewards from the beginning and it wasn’t long before the Historic Trail became the first legal single track for mountain biking in San Francisco. Dan wrangled favors from his diverse contacts in the early years including the Hop Union who would ship care packages of hops for the IPA beer we brewed for volunteers to consume after a morning of hard work. As the program grew in popularity Dan was soon receiving kegs of beer from many local brewer friends since the volunteer turnouts eventually surpassed our ability to keep brewing volumes of beer for volunteers. The back of our 3rd Anniversary t-shirt reads:
STATISTICS OVER 3 YEARS
Contributed 15,000 Volunteer Hours
Restored and Improved 8,700 Feet of Trail
Reclaimed 172,000 Sq. Ft. of Habitat
Consumed 1,680 Pints of Beer with 540 Pizzas
And Had Fun Doing It!

Dan was a visionary and often leaps ahead of the projects already lined up. Together with Dan our core group received permission to restore trails on the East Ridge, North Ridge, Edgewood and in the Interior Greenbelt with Rec & Park. Dan envisioned youth educational programming on Mount Sutro and was an early advocate for a Youth In Nature program (funded 2021). He thought a nursery could help supply native plants for habitat restoration (constructed 2011) and that Crew Leader Training could keep a constant supply of well trained supervisors for our volunteers (began 2008). All of these things have become part of the Sutro Stewards program, though not as quickly as Dan would have hoped. Dan brought in kids from the YMCA summer camp mountain biking program to learn trail-riding skills on the trails he helped lovingly construct by hand.

By 2009 Dan had founded the SF Urban Riders in hopes of expanding off-road bicycle access in other City parks and open spaces. While he remained active on Mount Sutro he sought to open other bike-friendly venues in McLaren Park, at Sutro Tower, and finally saw his vision come true in the Laguna Honda open space where he developed multi-use trails for the public to explore.

It would be true to say that most people who adventure out on Mount Sutro, Laguna Honda, around Sutro Tower have no idea how those trails became a part of their enjoyable adventure. Those of us who do, owe a debt of gratitude to the tenacious, restless, visionary who gave his time and sweat to create the wildest single-track experiences in San Francisco…thank you, Dan.

Dan Schneider passed away July 2021. He was doing what he loved most at the time, riding through the countryside of Sonoma where he and his wife Nicole had relocated last year.

New Leadership announcement

An announcement from Dan Schneider:

It is with great pleasure and confidence that I write this announcement to all SFUR members and the San Francisco community at large.

As of March 30, 2021 I have stepped away from a leadership role with SF Urban Riders and leaving it in the capable hands of the newly elected leadership team. The team moving forward consists of longtime leadership team members Matthew Blain, Nick Bear, Robert Peters, and Sasha Magee, as well as new members Eric Strempke and Dale Low, who will bring new energy and perspective.

My commitment to SFUR and its mission to create more off road bicycle opportunities in San Francisco started in 2008 as a founding member that believed in the simple concept of delivering off road cycling advocates and trail volunteers to projects on Mount Sutro and McLaren Park. It would not have been possible without a passionate team of co-founders and leadership team members stepping up at the right time with the right effort. Looking back over the past 12 years since the journey began, SFUR has played a significant role in creating urban trail opportunities for cyclists including the ongoing support of the aforementioned Mount Sutro trail system, initiating the McLaren Bike Park project, and ultimately establishing a relationship with city agencies to take lead on the Laguna Honda Community Trail System. In the early days SFUR even produced some ground breaking events like Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day (2010-2013), and the McLaren Short Track Challenge (2013-2014) which clearly highlighted the community support and need for off road cycling and opened doors to which has led to where we are today.

I am going out on a high note having been a part of the Laguna Honda trail design team and having the honor to lead the volunteer efforts to unlock the potential of such an incredible urban open space. I leave with the first three phases of this project in place but knowing that is just the beginning. Many great ideas keep percolating forward to enhance the open space and user experience which will be prioritized and pursued by the SFUR leadership team. I look forward to visiting and following the effort forward.

Right now Laguna Honda is ‘the bomb’ and deservedly so, but what does the future hold? SFUR has recently pushed a pilot trail program in Golden Gate Park, and are also involved in the Open the Watershed discussion for trails in the Pilarcitos Watershed so there’s still much opportunity at hand. It is my hope that the best is yet to come!

Sincerely,

Daniel Schneider
Founder of SF Urban Riders

Thank you Dan for over a decade of leadership in founding SF Urban Riders!

Laguna Honda Trails reopened

The Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center has let us know that the trails at Laguna Honda are again open to the public!

You can now visit, and see the work that SF Urban Riders have put in with support from the hospital, the SF Community Challenge Grant Program, and hundreds of volunteer hours. Stay tuned for updates on our volunteer program.

The Hospital itself remains closed to the general public, so please stay away from the buildings and other facilities used by residents and staff. This includes the farm area and lobby.

We would like to congratulate the facility for their hard work this past challenging year, and thank them for welcoming us to restore the trails and habitat.

Please enjoy the trail system, and as always recreate responsibly when doing so!

Laguna Honda trailwork – Winter 2020

Even during the pandemic, we’ve been busy (safely!) cleaning up trash, maintaining existing trails and building new ones. Some of our bigger projects included building a brand new trail (the Lost trail) which starts and ends near the junction of the Victory and Sherwood Road trails, planting native plants in many different locations and rebuilding the top of the Steep Ravine trail. Click here for information on joining our rewarding work days!

Laguna Honda Trails Closed

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is trails-closed-march2020-crop.jpg

The Department of Public Health, who manages the Laguna Honda Hospital, has closed the Laguna Honda Community Trail System due to the coronavirus pandemic. They need to protect the staff and residents of the hospital. They have asked SFUR to help them spread the word of the closure.

Laguna Honda has been a great partner. We agree that these measures, unfortunately, are necessary for the health of the hospital’s staff and residents, and want to encourage the cycling community to respect the trail closures.

Our organization has recently been awarded Community Challenge Grant funding for Phase 3, which is ready to go once this health situation clears. Cyclists not abiding by this trail closure request will jeopardize further trail development and all future mountain bike access. The trails are closed to all users but cyclists have more to lose and our community knows that. Thank you for your understanding.

We strongly urge you to be responsible and respect the posted trail closures. The Laguna Honda facility provides services for people in the high-risk category. It is our obligation as stewards of the project and members of the community to do what is in the best interests of the hospital community.

This restriction started 3/23/2020 and could be in place for a while so your cooperation and respect is much appreciated!

Edit: trails are now open as of 4/24/2021!
