I Build Trails

Many thanks to UCSF, San Francisco Park and Rec, and Speakeasy Brewery, who all committed resources to help this last Saturday’s Trail work happen. Many more thanks to everyone who contributed to the start of a wonderful connector trail between Edgewood Avenue and the rest of the Sutro Trails. Over 70 volunteers showed up to pitch in, and though no formal survey was taken, it seemed as though ages ranged from 2 to 70. It doesn’t matter how old you are, trails in a parkland are always a wonderful thing. It was wonderful to see trails develop over the course of a few hours, and the area in which we were building is technically SF Rec and Park land, the beginning of building trails into the SF Greenbelt. Who knows, if we keep this up, perhaps we’ll have paths leading us through fields of wildflowers and under lush green canopies throughout San Francisco.

Want to see what we’re dreaming of? What we’re going to rally public support for? SF Urban Riders is still in preliminary discussions about the details with SF RPD, but the proposed location has received tremendous initial support. Meanwhile, Dustin Smith and Mitch Monroe have developed a first draft of what we see evolving into some world-class bicycle skills features within McLaren Park.

It’s what we do around here. We just wanted to remind everyone to come out in 2 weeks time to learn how to do it right.

Saturday April 4th

Join SF Urban Riders as we join the International Mountain Bicycle Association’s (IMBA) trail crew, Jason Van Horn and Inga Beck as they lead a trail building workshop that includes a morning presentation followed by an afternoon of on trail experience. We are proud to announce that Jim Jacobson (China Camp, Camp Tamarancho) and Zack Anderson (Forest Trails Alliance) will also be lending their knowledge to the project. We will be realigning the East Ridge Trail and adding THREE unique switchbacks to divert the original trail from sensitive habitat and mitigate steep elevation loss.

8:45 am – 9 am Check In
9:15 am – 11:45am Trail Building Presentation in City Lights Room on UCSF Parnassus Campus (Behind Milberrry Union Food Court - 505 Parnassus Ave)

12 noon – 12:30pm Lunch in Woods Parking Lot

12:45 pm- 4:30 pm Trail work on Mount Sutro East Ridge

End of day- Tool clean up and Post work celebration

Food: Breakfast will be donated by NOAH’s Bagels - Bagels & cream cheese served with coffee and hot tea. Lunch will be hosted by UCSF – local pizza with water and soft drinks Afternoon snacks will be provided by Clif Bar.
End of day festivities will be hosted by SF Urban Riders & Beach Chalet Brewery with refreshments and snacks.
Tools: All gloves and tools will be provided by the Mount Sutro Stewards. We strongly encourage wearing work clothes with long sleeves and full pants.

All Cars must park at the woods lot (Off of Medical Center way, south of Parnassus)

Those utilizing other modes of transport should meet at the city lights room of UCSF @ 500 Parnassus Ave, San Francisco

DUE TO CONSTRUCTION: Remember to travel via Clarendon to Johnstone then down Medical Center Way.

Parking is available for volunteers only during scheduled activities.
