On Sunday October 3rd, SF Urban Riders and its partners hosted San Francisco’s Second Annual ‘Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day’ to great success. Over 30 youth between the ages of 8 – 16 years old, and their families, participated and took on the challenges of McLaren Park. The events long list of partners included Specialized Bicycles, Clif Bar, SF Rec & Park, Mike’s Bike’s, YMCA, Noah’s Bagels, and San Francyclo. The highlight was the FREE Bike Raffle Specialized hosted, and they generously donated TWO 2010 Specialized Hardrock Bicycles!
The morning started at 7am with an early Fall rain shower as we arrived at McLaren Park to set up. SFUR and the YMCA were responsible for laying out the course. so a judgement call was made to keep all the wood skills features upside down until the showers past or the event started, whichever came first. As the day would prove, nothing can dampen the spirits of excited youth.
The event took place on the South East side of the park near what is often refered to as the ‘Old BMX Course’. At the main staging area at the Parking Lot/Over Look located at Mansell Street and Visitacion Ave, Specialized, Mike’s Bikes, and San Francyclo teamed up for a helmet fit station and bike maintenance area, while SFUR, YMCA, staff and volunteers handled the registration and hospitality.
Further up the hill, SFUR, SFRPD, and YMCA instructors offered a bike skills course loop complete with dirt trails, a few natural whoopdee-doos, and a sizeable paved surface with skills features like teeter-totters, a balance beam, ramp-overs, and some small drops. After each participant was warmed up on the skills course, SFUR Executive Director Dan Schneider led a healthy group of young riders and their families on a small trail ride of McLaren Park.
The day ended with the Specialized Bike Raffle and the big smiles of TWO lucky winners. There was plenty of other goodies for everyone including T Shirts, stickers, water bottles, helmets, and of course all the wonderful food and beverages from our generous sponsors!
